Does your representative in Washington represent YOU and the public opinion?

Are the elected officials we put our trust in ignoring public opinion these days? Representing the majority should be their main focus, but somehow all the people who are not rich and powerful end up forgotten and abused. Why is that, and what can we do to change it?

Well, the first step is to educate ourselves, and realize that this great nation is supposed to be for the people by the people. Political issues are for everybody. Is it really reasonable to have an entire body of representatives for ordinary people, of whom a overwhelming majority are millionaires? Is that really representative of the country as a whole?

I used to be completely indifferent to all the political babble; It all just sounded like pointless yelling and arguing to me.

Public opinion polls and political debates made my eyes glaze over. Politics and government were about as interesting as watching grass grow. When it came to voting things seemed so difficult to grasp, and I often felt like there just wasn't a worthy candidate at all.

And why on earth would I vote just for the sake of voting? I had neither the time nor the inclination to learn enough about the subject to make an educated decision. Too much work, and way too boring!

Well, since moving in with my common sense politically obsessed fiance, my views have changed dramatically. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that the political issues being discussed on TV these days are so major that it's actually getting hard not to pay attention. (But for now I'll just let my beloved hope that this drastic change in me might in time apply to sports as well).

We decided to create my-public-opinion for ordinary people, the majority of us. It is meant to serve as a primer on politics and government, current political issues and debates. We want to get as many people as possible interested and involved enough to get out and vote. Understanding the basics will give you the confidence to form your own opinion, and then share your public opinion with others!

Our hope is to somehow help get all eligible voters motivated to exercise their constitutional right. Vital, at a time when ridiculous new laws are being passed specifically designed to shut out certain demographic groups.

We are dealing with a political and economic crisis that seems to be going in the wrong direction. Civil rights are being violated, corporate greed is taking over everything, and common decency, fairness and morality have all gone right out the window. It's high time for common sense, reasonable, ordinary people to get involved again, and make the powers-that-be pay attention to the public opinion.

A very highly debated and misunderstood issue these days is taxes. The republican party keeps repeating its mantra "no new taxes". Well, as a short soundbite this may sound very appealing, because money is indeed tight for most of us. Are those democrats really trying to hurt us...?

NO! Further examination reveals that the real purpose is to forever get millionaires and billionaires out of having to pay their fair share, if any share at all. Welfare for the greedy, instead of the needy. Is this what "shared sacrifice" is all about?

I don't know about you, but we are not in the million and above tax bracket. We're just ordinary middle class people trying to get by, and express the public opinion.
